only one way to answer this scout scout and scout some more and just because you dont see fish one day don't mean they won't be there the next. it takes many years to figure your area out but once you do you will take bowfishing to the next level for your self. most people can find fish in the spring. it take dedication and time to figure the rest of the year out..

i also live in kentucky and some of the best places i bowfish in is creeks start searching in them you can wait in the water and trust me its not going to scare away the fish ive had them swim right underneath me
Dont limit yourself.......try both until you figure out what YOU like the best. If you have access to any tailwaters or backwaters on the Ohio River start on those areas. I got started bowfishing by noticing all the rough fish concentrated around the tail waters of the local dam here on the Ohio River. Every year the game fish stopped biting once the Gar moved in, couldnt catch the Gar so I figured I'd try shooting them. Another plus to these locations is the multiple species that inhabit these waters, you never know what will swim by next! By spending alot of time fishing this area, I already had a good pattern on the Gar once I started bowfishing........Good Luck!
